BUTTES CHAUMONTA magnificent garden in the 19th arrondissement, the Parc des Buttes Chaumont is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful achievements of the 19th century in Paris. A large area (25 hectares) and a diversity of landscapes that offer an ideal setting for all outdoor activities.A garden that has the particularity of being entirely artificial. Built in 1864 at the request of Napoleon III, who wished to offer large green spaces to the working-class districts of Paris, the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont was created on a gigantic gypsum quarry (mineral used for the manufacture of plaster), extracted from the Parisian subsoil since antiquity. It is a real feat to have replaced hollow, infertile and arid land with a sumptuous green setting!The undulating lines, which play with the reliefs of the old open-air quarries and allow pleasant strolls on different levels, reveal multiple decorations typical of the 19th century. Waterfalls, exotic plants and trees, suspension bridges... These entertainments were intended to make the working class population of the time travel. If you go around the lake, you will even see a copy of the famous cliffs of Étretat carved in the rock!Other decorative techniques that were very fashionable at the time are visible: rustication and rockwork.Finally, after crossing the metal suspension bridge designed by Gustave Eiffel, you can access the reproduction of the Temple of the Sybil, in Tivoli, Italy, located at the top of the hill. A true emblem of the park, it offers a beautiful view of the garden and its surroundings. You can also enjoy the beautiful architecture, although sober and not very present, so as not to disturb the general harmony of the gardens.
