PERE LACHAISE CEMETERY The Père-Lachaise Cemetery is arguably the best-known cemetery in Paris, if not the world. And it's easy to see why when you visit it. Although Paris is full of attractive cemeteries (Montparnasse, Montmartre, Batignolles), this one is the most surprising, and the most beautiful, in many respects. First and foremost, of course, because it's home to a huge number of celebrities from all over the world. But also because, as you stroll along its cobbled streets, you'll come across a wide variety of plant species, something you wouldn't necessarily expect to find here. Cherry, maple, chestnut, weeping willow, walnut... Père-Lachaise cemetery boasts some 5,000 trees, representing some 50 different species, spread over an area of 44 hectares. This makes it the largest green space in Paris! Not to be missed during your visit: The tomb of Allan Kardec, founder of spiritualism, whose grave, the most flower-filled in the cemetery, is a Breton dolmen. The neighboring tombs of Molière and Jean de la Fontaine, who died in the 17th century and were transferred here to make the cemetery more attractive. The tomb of Victor Noir, a journalist killed by Napoleon III's cousin and a symbol of the "recumbent" funeral style. The tombs of Jim Morison and Oscar Wilde, although these are now protected by fences due to repeated damage. The superb tombs of Théodore Guéricault and Frédéric Chopin.
