BASTILLE NEIGHBORHOOD It’s easy to treat your taste buds in the area around the Bastille. Between Faubourg-Saint-Antoine and Rue de Charenton, you’ll find one of Paris’s most iconic markets: the Beauvau Market, better known as the Aligre Market. Both inside the market halls and outside, working-class Paris mixes with a boho-chic crowd. On the menu: numerous food shops, such as the Langlet-Hardouin cheese shop (which offers some 80 varieties of goat cheese!), local olive oils from Sur les Quais, the Café Aouba roastery (where you can also sit down for an espresso), and even “meat” without meat at La Boucherie Végétarienne, which makes products from plant-based paste. Other must-visit spots include: the retro delicatessen À boire et à manger, gluten-free products from Bears & Raccoons, and hundreds of beers at Paris Saint Bière… And for a sandwich break, a must-visit is CheZ Aline, a tiny restaurant housed in a former horse butcher shop, where you can enjoy—either to eat in or take out—one of the best ham-and-butter sandwiches in the capital! In the mood for culture? The Bastille neighborhood is also home to several vibrant galleries, such as Arts Factory, Less Is More Projects, and the very international Dorothy’s Gallery. Along Avenue Daumesnil, the Viaduc des Arts houses some fifty studios beneath its arcades. It’s a place worth visiting just to discover all these artisan crafts. For a truly cultural shopping experience, head to Boulevard Richard-Lenoir every Saturday, where the Marché Art et Création Paris-Bastille takes place. Neo-gastronomic cuisine takes center stage in this eastern part of Paris, and several high-profile young chefs have set up shop in and around the Bastille neighborhood. Among the top spots, treat yourself to a Michelin-starred experience at Septime (one Michelin star), discover the bistro-gourmet vibe of Australian chef James E. Henry at Bones, sample the fusion cuisine of a former Top Chef contestant at Pierre Sang in Oberkampf, and savor the neo-classical and inspired creations of the Levha sisters at Servan… Turn your back on the hustle and bustle of Paris for a moment and take a break at the Bassin de l’Arsenal, just a stone’s throw from Place de la Bastille. This former cargo port, which connects the Canal Saint-Martin to the Seine, is now dedicated to recreational boating.
