A district between tradition and modernity The Grandes Carrières district owes its name to the old gypsum quarries that were once used to make plaster of Paris. Today, the area is undergoing a major transformation, combining old Haussmann-style buildings with more modern residences and urban redevelopment projects. Atmosphere and local life Avenue de Saint-Ouen is a lively thoroughfare that runs through several districts of Paris, linking Place de Clichy to the gates of Saint-Ouen. It is home to many local shops, including bakeries, supermarkets, restaurants, cafés and various boutiques.
