Chic and bohemian, the Croix-Rousse is an endearing district of Lyon. Here you'll find small shops, Lyonnais bouchons, a nice market and a village atmosphere. La Croix-Rousse is located north of the Presqu'île. From Les Terreaux or the Opéra, you can immediately climb "the slopes". On the Croix-Rousse plateau, there is a village atmosphere, a little boho and very pleasant. It was in this neighborhood that the silk workers or "canuts" once lived and worked, Lyon being the capital of silk. A working-class district, it was poor and notorious for a long time. That has changed! It is on the slopes that you will find many authentic Lyon bouchons. And yes, the first customers of the bouchons were the canuts, who came to eat with the Mères Lyonnaises, a family kitchen. It is because of this working-class past that the hill of the Croix Rousse is called "the hill that works" as opposed to Fourvière "the hill that prays".
